Programme Note
The HSO perform the overture to Hansel and Gretel by Humperdink. Although the overture wasn't written in time for the first performance under the baton of Richard Strauss it quickly become a favourite opera.
The idea for the opera was proposed to Humperdinck by his sister, who approached him about writing music for songs that she had written for her children for Christmas based on "Hansel and Gretel". After several revisions, the musical sketches and the songs were turned into a full-scale opera.
Clara Schumann was a esteemed concert pianist during her life and was fully supported by her husband Robert. She wrote a number of compositions for the piano including tonight's concerto which will be played by Simon Ballard.
The second half consists of Tchaikovsky's early 'Winter Daydreams' Symphony. The symphony was written soon after he was appointed as professor at the Moscow Conservatory.
The HSO wellcomes the return of Dan James as their fulltime conductor.
