Programme Note
Now into its third year, our Orpheus Sinfonia Foundation Programme is rapidly establishing itself as a centre of excellence for emerging professionals, mentored by our Principals and friends from throughout the industry. The concerts are an exhilarating display of formidable talent and tantalising programming and this season’s launch promises no less.
Our new cohort of Foundationers, sitting next to our Orpheus Principals, perform a programme of Beethoven, Alberga and Mendelssohn under the baton of Artistic Director Thomas Carroll, and our newly appointed 2025-26 Foundation Conductor.
A welcome return from sensational young US violinist Nathan Meltzer as soloist for Eleanor Alberga’s Violin Concerto No. 1. Nathan was the youngest ever winner of the Windsor Festival International String Competition, and many will remember his breath-taking performance of the Mendelssohn Concerto at the very first Orpheus Sinfonia Foundation Programme concert in 2023. Alberga’s First Violin Concerto is a tour de force for orchestra and soloist alike. It explores the brilliant "drama" of the relationship between the solo violin and the orchestra, as well as the violin's ability to express human vulnerability.
Opening the concert is Beethoven’s Egmont Overture, a powerful and dramatic musical journey that sweeps listeners from intense struggle to triumphant victory.
It’s very exciting and fitting to be performing Mendelssohn’s Scottish Symphony as Mendelssohn himself was a frequent attendee and performer at the Hanover Square Rooms concert series in the 1800s where many of his works were premiered to the eager London audiences. A unique chance for you to walk in those footsteps and hear his Scottish Symphony here in Hanover Square, just as the audiences of his day did nearly 200 years ago. Vividly conjuring up the windswept landscapes and romantic legends of Scotland through its evocative melodies and dramatic shifts, Mendelssohn’s Scottish Symphony is sure to transport you to the Scottish Highlands right from your seat here in Central London.
“In the deep twilight we went today to the palace where Queen Mary lived and loved...The chapel below is now roofless. Grass and ivy thrive there and at the broken altar where Mary was crowned Queen of Scotland. Everything is ruined, decayed, and the clear heavens pour in. I think I have found there the beginning of my "Scottish" Symphony”
FELIX MEDELSSOHN
