Followed by Richard Strauss’s youthful Serenade in E-flat major for 13 wind instruments we then travel to the world of Igor Stravinsky’s playful and witty Pulcinella—a ballet suite that dances between tradition and innovation. The program culminates in the ultimate musical puzzle, Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations, a masterpiece of suspense and emotion. Who are the friends and figures hidden within its themes?
