Programme Note
The Echéa Quartet was formed in 2017 at the Royal Academy of Music, London, and have quickly cultivated a reputation as one of the most exciting young quartets working today. They are currently Chamber Music Fellows at the Royal College of Music, artists for the Kirckman Concert Society and City Music Foundation, and are Yeomen of the Worshipful Company of Musicians. They have performed as far afield as the Festival de los Siete Lagos (Argentina) and the Banff Centre (Canada), as well as across Europe, including at the Musikverein (Vienna), Wigmore Hall (London), and Philharmonie de Paris.
The first half of their recital at HBCMF features two concise works from composers renowned for their cycles of fifteen (Lutyens) and six (Bartók) quartets. We'll hear Lutyens' sixth quartet, written in 1952 in one intense 12-hour session, and then Bartók's dazzling third quartet from 1927. After the interval we jump back to 1838 for Felix Mendelssohn's joyful fifth quartet.
