Programme Note
Steinitz Bach Players was founded in 1968 by Paul Steinitz in the most important musical decade of the 20th century. These years saw the full flowering of British musical life post WW2. London Sinfonietta, founded the same year, rolled back the boundaries in contemporary music and the influence of Britten and Pears at Aldeburgh was at its height. A golden generation of singers graced our stages...and Steinitz was advocating period-style playing on original instruments. A new orchestra was born.
With its historic Bach achievements under Steinitz well-stocked, the SBP today plays a pivotal role in the annual LBS Bachfest, appearing in concerts of the major works, cantatas or chamber music either self-directed or with a guest conductor, joined by a stellar assembly of the very best musicians. The orchestra celebrates its Golden Jubilee at this concert.
This year marks 400th anniversary of the Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648) and 100th anniversary of the end of WW1. The fall-out of both profoundly influenced cultural life in their succeeding decades – for Bach and for the new British Bach revival. In remembrance, our programme “Out of Conflict…the Peace” runs the gamut of human emotion, from fear and hope in Cantata 60 to unalloyed joy in the first Brandenburg as only JSB can create it.
