Programme Note

A MUSICAL FEAST FROM EPSOM CHAMBER CHOIR

Epsom Chamber Choir’s summer concert takes place at St Martin’s Church, Epsom on Saturday 28th June.

Titled ‘The Food of Love’, the programme is inspired by the words of – you’ve guessed it - William Shakespeare, interpreted by rather more contemporary composers George Shearing, Leonard Bernstein and Finnish composer Mäntyjärvi.

Jazz legend Shearing’s uplifting Songs & Sonnets take centre stage along with Mäntyjärvi’s setting of texts from Shakespeare plays and a medley of music from Bernstein’s magical update of Romeo and Juliet - West Side Story.  The Shakespeare link is maintained with music by near contemporary Purcell and a selection of English madrigals, sung by small groups within the choir. They then swing firmly into modern times with Eric Whitacre’s Leonardo Dreams of his Flying Machine and a couple of toe-tapping Gershwin arrangements.

Epsom Chamber Choir is a highly-regarded choir regularly performing ambitious and exciting programmes in St Martin of Tours Church, Epsom. They will be directed in this concert by guest conductor Tristan Weymes and accompanied by pianist Stephen Ridge.
