Programme Note

Legends, mostly untrue, swirl around Mozart’s Requiem – the last work that Mozart composed, but left incomplete when he died in 1791. Whilst several have attempted to complete it, the version by his trusted student Süssmayr remains the gold standard, and it is that version that forms the centrepiece of the final concert of our 50th season. Churning with pathos, despair and anger, yet balanced with moments of light, peace and quiet beauty, this now universally adored work, written by a young genius who undoubtedly knew he was nearing the end, is some of Mozart’s most powerful music.

Aas well as Mendelssohn's Verleih uns Frieden and Finzi's idyllic Eclogue, we are thrilled to present a newly commissioned work to celebrate our 50th birthday season. Written by one of the UK’s foremost choral composers, this world première crowns our season, and launches us into our next decade. We can’t wait to reveal more in due course, and for you to hear it!!
