NEW WORLDS

The music of America and beyond, celebrating the 60th anniversary of the American Memorial Chapel at St Paul’s Cathedral

Fast Cycles - American Minimalism at the Organ

Explore new musical worlds as US composer Nico Muhly, one of the most influential musicians working today, joins with innovative organist James McVinnie and friends to present his own music alongside iconic masterpieces from the American minimalist tradition. The programme includes one of the most important works of the twentieth-century, Steve Reich’s Four Organs, a piece that nearly caused a riot at its Carnegie Hall debut, Michael Tilson Thomas recalling: “One woman walked down the aisle and repeatedly banged her head on the front of the stage, wailing ‘Stop, stop, I confess.’”
