In the summer of 1906, Mahler experienced an intense burst of creativity whilst writing his 8th Symphony. In his own words, he “saw the whole piece immediately… and only needed to write it down, as though it were being dictated”. Whoever was leading Mahler was inspired – the result is still celebrated today as one of the most expansive and ambitious works in the repertoire. In a fitting opening to their 150th anniversary season, The Bach Choir perform Mahler’s ‘Symphony of a Thousand’ in the inspiring surroundings of St Paul’s Cathedral.
