Programme Note
Ensemble East makes a welcome return to St Peter Mancroft this July to perform a varied programme of Mozart, Ibert, Ives & Schubert.
Mozart’s youthful Divertimento K136 for strings is a delightfully exuberant work. Ibert’s virtuosic Flute Concerto, performed by local player Claire Luck, incorporates a number of eclectic styles; restless and chromatic passagework, beautiful soulful and reflective melodies, jazzy syncopations and fireworks.
The second half opens with Charles Ives’ beautiful and perplexing, The Unanswered Question, a miniature he called a “cosmic drama”, scored for solo trumpet, wind quartet and strings. Schubert's Symphony No. 2 closes the concert with a classical flourish.
