Programme Note
After a gap of two hundred years English choral music flourished anew during the second half of the 19c in a later Renaissance, and this momentum has remained in force up to our own times. The music in today’s programme reflects, as may be expected, the changes in musical language over the c.150 years, from the richly Romantic sound of Stanford and Elgar through the more Anglicised harmonies of Delius and Howells (in his in memoriam for J. F. Kennedy, Take him, Earth, for cherishing) to the contemporary sounds of music by Douglas Young, Timothy Salter and Joseph Horovitz, in whose setting of Wilde’s poem Endymion Jocelyn Coates is the soprano soloist.
The Ionian Singers are a chamber choir of about 28 singers with a national and international reputation based on performances and recordings.
The Ionian Singers give concerts in central London venues and throughout the UK for festivals and music societies. They have broadcast in the UK and Europe and their recordings range from music of the Renaissance through English and Scandinavian Romantics to the present. The choir is known for its commitment to new music, has given many first performances and has commissioned new works from several British composers.
