Tchaikovsky’s winning romanticism was brought to its apotheosis in the sweeping and soul searching visions of Rachmaninoff - nowhere is this more evident the latter’s 2nd symphony. Both composers, however, were equally adept when working on a smaller scale, as evinced by the heart rending simplicity of Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise and the elegance and restraint of Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme.
