Programme Note

The century between 1840 and 1940 witnessed the creation of some of the most enduring and iconic works in all of Russian music. Tchaikovsky’s winning romanticism was brought to its apotheosis in the sweeping and soul searching visions of Rachmaninoff - nowhere is this more evident the latter’s 2nd symphony. Both composers, however, were equally adept when working on a smaller scale, as evinced by the heart rending simplicity of Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise and the elegance and restraint of Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme.

Soloist Guy Johnston
