Tai, a former BBC New Generation Artist, is an inspiring talent, appreciated for her elegance and effortless ability, mature phrasing and subtle sweetness. From a Far Country is inspired by a visit in 1829 to the basalt sea cave known as Fingal’s Cave, Mendelssohn was impelled to sketch out the opening of his windswept and gull-strewn overture. His tour of Scotland that year bore further fruit in the form of his Symphony No. 3 the “Scottish” where he found his imagination sparked by the ruin and decay of an abandoned ivy-cloaked chapel; broken and roofless, through which the clear light poured in. Anna Meredith’s Fringeflower was conceived after seeing Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s Butterfly Flower at the Fleming Collection. Its ‘quirky flatness’ and ‘unnatural’ perspective generates a general mood of slightly disjointed unease. Max Bruch famously channelled the Scottish spirit in his Fantasy for Violin and Orchestra but his first Violin Concerto is even more popular; an irresistible concoction of heartfelt melodies, ravishing harmonies and furious fiddling.
