Programme Note

As the School launches its first study Composition programme this September, we are delighted to appoint Sally Beamish OBE
as our first Composer in Residence. Not only one of the UK’s leading composers, but also an immensely accomplished violist and chamber musician, Beamish will join us on stage to perform her Partita for String Octet with our pupils. Framing the work, we will have arrangements of a selection of Debussy Preludes by pupils of the School. To close the evening, we will present the two-piano arrangement of Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances Op 45, his last major work and, through its sentiment, its energy, and its kaleidoscope of quotations, a powerful summary of a life in music.

Preceding the concert, Sally Beamish will join us for an interview to talk about her work as a composer and performer.

Running time: 90 minutes plus interval
