According to tradition, our Winter Festival will close with works for choir as well as orchestra, featuring two Bach concerti, one for violin and one for keyboard, framing a brand-new commission by our very own Deputy Director of Music, Marco Galvani. This piece is a large-scale work for choir and strings, setting newly written poems by Gillian Clarke, who was the National Poet of Wales from 2008–2016. The Year’s Midnight is a meditation on the frost and cold of deep winter emerging into the joy and renewal of spring. To finish, we will bid the year farewell and wish our audience a very merry, peaceful Christmas with Vaughan Williams’ glorious Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, which will be directed by internationally renowned violinist David Grimal.
Running time: 90 minutes plus interval
