Programme Note

The Marriage of the Northern Star

Friday 20 September, 7.30pm

“Dearest Brothers, Sisters and Friends…” you are invited to a splendid wedding party as we celebrate the marriage of Adolf Frederick of Sweden and Louisa Ulrika of Prussia – at the end of summer 1744 – with a spellbinding feast of music, song and dance.

From the earthy songs of Bellman to the refined elegance of Roman (the “Swedish Handel”, who indeed spent some six years studying in London with Handel and others) and Kraus (in his turn later nicknamed the “Swedish Mozart”), this is music drenched in the Nordic summer, light and carefree life outdoors, to which we bid a fond farewell as the autumn nights draw in.

Featuring Finnish-Swedish soprano Andrea Eklund and the award-winning ensembles Flauguissimo and Consone (BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists 2019–2021), the show met with great acclaim at its premiere at the Brighton Early Music Festival last year and this is an unmissable opportunity to see it in London!

Don your mask and join us to this splendid party. Drinks and delicious Swedish cakes and pastries will be available to purchase for enjoyment at your banquet table throughout the evening.
