Nordic Noir and Prussian Blue
Saturday 21 September, 6.00pm
Through the marriage of Adolf Frederick and Louisa Ulrika, cultural and political ties were strengthened between the Swedish and Prussian courts. The flute was a favoured instrument instrument at both, featuring strongly in the works of Johan Helmich Roman and other Nordic composers. Louisa Ulrika’s sister Anna Amalia and brother Frederick the Great were both flautists, active musicians and passionate patrons of music and musicians such as Johann Joachim Quantz and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach.
Northern Star Festival Artistic Directors Yu-Wei Hu (flute) and Johan Löfving (theorbo) are joined by two award-winning artists, recorder player Olwen Foulkes and viola da gamba virtuoso Kate Conway to create a unique sound world for an evening of intimate music-making – perfect for the darkening autumn nights as the Northern Star shines ever brighter.
