Programme Note

Oxford Philharmonic Concertmaster Natalia Lomeiko and Solo Cello Mats Lidström join pianist Katya Apekisheva for chamber music from England, France and Belgium. John Ireland’s 1917 Piano Trio No. 2 is a work of haunting beauty in which the composer confessed to ‘clinging to the beauty that remained on earth amidst the carnage.’ The war was a memory for Gabriel Fauré, whose 1923 Piano Trio in D minor is a melodic journey from solemnity to joie de vivre. There is no shortage of passion and intensity in César Franck’s only Violin Sonata, a wedding present for the great Belgian virtuoso Eugene Ysaÿe buoyed by the prospect of nascent love.

Supported by Elizabeth & David Ure and Celia & Andrew Curran
