Programme Note
A memorable evening of glorious, seasonal choral music in the majestic setting of Worcester Cathedral, Worcester Festival Choral Society’s Messiah is the region's ultimate Christmas concert.
For more than 275 years, Handel’s compelling and richly varied Messiah has held a unique place in the affections of music lovers across the English-speaking world. Its greatest choruses – such as the instantly recognisable Hallelujah and For unto us a Child is Born – are among the most popular pieces of music ever written. So rousing is the work that, during the London premiere of Messiah in 1743, King George II rose to his feet at the start of the Hallelujah chorus and remained standing until the end; a tradition that is followed around the world today.
Performing with the 150 members of Worcester Festival Choral Society – many of whose members perform in the annual Three Choirs Festival – will be the Meridian Sinfonia and acclaimed soloists. Worcester Cathedral Director of Music, Dr Peter Nardone, conducts. Tickets £10 - £25 (some concessions available) from www.worcesterfestivalchoralsociety.org.uk
