French composer Maurice Duruflé’s exquisite 1947 Requiem reflects his early musical training at the cathedral in Rouen, where there was a famous school of Gregorian chant. Taking the Gregorian plainchant Mass for the Dead as his raw material, and carefully selecting from its texts, Duruflé combined ancient melodies with sophisticated modern harmonies and rhythms to create a truly tender and moving choral experience. Marking 100 years since the end of the First World War, the concert also features modern masterpiece For An Unknown Soldier, written by celebrated British composer Jonathan Dove in 2014. Using texts by First World War writers such as Wilfred Owen, Isaac Rosenberg and Harold Monro, this evocative cantata is a powerful musical reflection on the waste and devastation of the First World War, bringing to life the thoughts of soldiers serving on the front. Performing with the 150 members of Worcester Festival Choral Society – many of whose members perform in the annual Three Choirs Festival – will be the Meridian Sinfonia and acclaimed soloists. Worcester Cathedral Director of Music, Dr Peter Nardone, conducts.
