Formed in 2002, they continue their original mission of prioritising strong, composer-led programmes, often collaborating with regular guest artists. Their name reflects an admiration for English music of the early twentieth century, represented by their hugely successful Frank Bridge recordings. In Beethoven's first significant publication, he broadened the piano trio genre of Mozart and Haydn, balancing the players' roles, adding a fourth movement, and increasing the complexity and emotional depth. Frank Bridge's Phantasie Trio, written for and winning a "Phantasy" competition in 1907, compresses a multitude of romantic moods into a single movement.
