Programme Note

The Fibonacci Quartet are one of Europe's leading young string quartets.  Based in the UK and formed at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the quartet hold residencies at the Escuela Superior de Musica Reina Sofia in Madrid with Günter Pichler and at the Dutch String Quartet Academy with Marc Danel.

The programme begins with the first of Mozart's late 'Prussian' quartets, commissioned by the King of Prussia, who was a talented cellist.  Despite Mozart's difficult circumstances in these last years of his life, the music is refined and graceful. By contrast, Janáček's 'Intimate Letters', inspired by his long friendship with Kamila Stösslová is raw, disjointed and highly emotional. Finally, Tchaikovsky's last string quartet was written in memory of his friend Ferdinand Laub, and has a particularly moving Adagio.
