Programme Note

Described by The Strad as presenting “a masterclass in unanimity of musical purpose, in which severity could melt seamlessly into charm, and drama into geniality”, the award-winning Carducci Quartet is internationally acclaimed as one of the most accomplished and versatile ensembles of today.  In addition to the core repertoire, the quartet presents a selection of new works each season, and diversifies into film music, pop, folk, rock, and the spoken word.

Mendelssohn's spirited, classically-inflected third quartet, written in the early years of his marriage, was his favourite of the Opus 44 works.  Philip Glass' six movement quartet was assembled from the childhood scenes in his score for the 1985 film Mishima.  Beethoven's Opus 132 is the second of his late quartets, regarded as among the greatest chamber works ever written.
