Programme Note

Music, like nature, occasionally produces something that looks much like a miracle. In the 19th century, it was the teenage prodigy Felix Mendelssohn. In 2019, it’s the 13-year old violin virtuoso Leïa Zhu, who’s astonished audiences and critics across Europe, and tonight makes her British concerto debut in Mendelssohn’s hugely popular Violin Concerto. “It is fun,” she says. “That’s also the beauty of making music. Each time, it is different.” Fresh, brilliant and utterly life-affirming, her performance will be the heart of a whole evening of music specially chosen to prove that where genius is concerned, youth is a state of mind.
