Programme Note

French repertoire and dance are two things close to Kathryn Stott’s performing heart, and they both feature in this programme which offers Ravel’s heady collection of Valses nobles et sentimentales paired with pieces by Satie: the decidedly sentimental waltz that is Je te veux (originally a song) and his Gnossienne No. 1 (a piece that functions like a free-form dance in languidly slow motion). By contrast, Bartok’s Romanian Folk Dances proceed, according to the composer’s instruction, at a pace - finishing all too soon for music of such charismatic allure. And there’s a comparable briskness in the original keyboard version of Grieg’s Holberg Suite, which revisits 18th century dance forms of the kind once used by Bach. But Wilhelm Kempff’s transcription of Bach’s own balmy Siciliano, from the Flute Sonata, BWV 1031, brings a restorative serenity, as does the poignant sadness of another waltz, Valsa da dor by Villa-Lobos.
