Programme Note

From his emergence as joint-winner of the 1982 Tchaikovsky Competition, Peter Donohoe has been a constant and impressive presence on the world piano circuit – known especially for his expertise in Russian and contemporary music. He’s also known for versatility, as his Oxford programme demonstrates. Beginning with a handful of the short, lyrical pieces Mendelssohn wrote in quantity and called Songs without Words, it edges back in time to the last and most substantial of Haydn’s keyboard sonatas, Hob. XVI:52, written in London for a local lady pianist of presumably considerable accomplishment and stamina. And then there’s Schubert, in the form of four Impromptus – a classification that wasn’t actually Schubert’s (the idea came from his publisher), though it’s a fair description of the free, spontaneous (and yes, improvisatory) manner of the writing, which incorporates adventure, drama, brilliance and reflection. A kaleidoscope of moods that Peter Donohoe will turn with his unfailing virtuosity.
