Borodin dedicated this quartet to his wife, perhaps as a gift for their 20th anniversary, and is said to depict their first meeting. Composed just two years before his death, Beethoven’s A minor quartet is also known as the ‘Heiliger Dankgesang’ Quartet, after of the third movement, the emotional core of the work, which is subtitled ‘Heiliger Dankgesang eines Genesenen an die Gottheit, in der lydischen Tonart’ (Holy song of thanksgiving of a convalescent to the Deity).
