Programme Note

In contrast to the orchestral whirlwind of Berlioz’s Le Carnaval Romain, Joubert’s richly atmospheric English Requiem, premiered at the festival in 2010, comprises a series of reflections on death, charting an emotional trajectory from despair to bright hope. Alongside this, Elgar’s last major orchestral work, the contemplative Cello Concerto is performed by the captivating Natalie Clein in a centenary performance.
