Dvořák’s sparkling overture is matched by the extrovert brilliance of Shostakovich’s concerto. Our soloist is the young, prizewinning Russian pianist, Alexander Panfilov. On the title page of Berlioz’s supremely passionate and autobiographical Symphonie Fantastique, which includes the famous “March to the Scaffold”, the composer quoted from Victor Hugo: “all I have loved, all I have suffered, all I have attempted”.
