Programme Note

***Please be advised, in a change to our advertised programme for this weekend's concert, Amy Harman will no longer be playing the Berwald. Instead, the orchestra will be performing Sibelius' Finlandia.***

The bassoon may be the Cinderella of wind instruments, but Amy Harman makes it sing and brings us two splendidly varied examples of her solo art. Mozart’s delightful Concerto is followed by the Swedish composer Franz Berwald’s flamboyant Concert Piece. We start with the Czech bravura of Smetana’s overture, and finish with the splendour of Sibelius’s most popular Symphony, No.2. It’s an epic struggle, particularly the finale, seen by many as epitomising the Finnish people’s cries for freedom.
