Programme Note

Distinguished cellist Raphael Wallfisch performs four of the six Cello Suites by JS Bach: 1 in G major, 3 in C major, 5 in C minor, and 6 in D major. These extraordinary works are among the summits of this great composer’s achievements. Each comprises a prelude and a sequence of baroque dance movements: allemande, courante, sarabande, galanteries (pairs of minuets, bourrées or gavottes) & gigue; the 6th Suite was described by Rostropovich as a “Symphony for Cello”. Raphael Wallfisch is “at the height of his powers with a masterful technique and a soaring, singing sound” and will introduce them. An earlier recital of these Suites by him was described as “... not just a performance, but an experience.”
