Programme Note
BOCCHERINI
Luigi Boccherini was an Italian composer and cellist of the Classical era whose music retained a courtly and ‘galante’ style. His Sextet in F minor, G. 457 contains passages of solemnity and grace but is mostly spirited, leading to the finale which bursts forth with great joy and light. Boccherini was a contemporary of Haydn and Mozart, and equally inventive, as can be heard in this beautifully sonorous work.
STRAUSS
Capriccio was Richard Strauss' last operatic venture, and, like the final works of other great composers, it sums up a lifetime of stylistic achievement. The lovely string Sextet that serves as the introduction to Capriccio demonstrates an opulent harmonic palette and rich instrumental textures. Notoriously difficult to play, but joyful to listen to, Strauss called this his ‘conversation piece’.
BRAHMS
Brahms is one of the Romantic period's most revered and popular composers, considered somewhat steady but not afraid to explore. He was twenty-seven when he composed the First Sextet, by which time his musical discretion was able to resist the temptation to score too abundantly for the medium. Here, however, he explores ‘across the bar’ phrases of irregular length with delightful and telling effect.
