Programme Note

The clarinet, with which we are so familiar today, is a relative newcomer to the orchestral family, indeed it was the last instrument to be included in a symphony orchestra. Invented by Johann Denner in Germany in around 1690, the clarinet continued to evolve through the subsequent century when it was gradually embraced by composers who marvelled at its near vocal possibilities and rich tone.  Meaning ‘little trumpet’, this instrument inspired two of the finest cornerstones of chamber music: Mozart’s beautiful and influential Clarinet Quintet in A major (1789), nicknamed the ‘Stadler Quintet’ after the virtuosic principal clarinettist of Vienna’s Court Orchestra Anton Stadler, and Brahms’ exquisite Clarinet Quintet in B minor (1891).

We are delighted that our fantastic course director and cellist Matthijs Broersma will be joined by the superb clarinettist Joseph Shiner and three outstanding violin and viola players to perform these magnificent compositions.

We expect this concert will be popular! Come early to reserve your seat! Refreshments available before the performance and during the interval.
