Free Maiastra Concert

Piano quartets by Mozart and Fauré

Part of the Maiastra 2018/19 Series

Add to my Calendar 26-01-2019 19:30 26-01-2019 21:30 36 Free Maiastra Concert ProgrammeMozart: The piano quartet genre was practically invented by Mozart, although he wrote only two. However his first piano quartet, in G minor, was rejected as uncommercial and too challenging by publisher Hoffmeister, who duly released him from a contract for two further quartets! The more visionary publisher Artaria took it on instead, publishing it together with this E flat major Quartet in 1787. For the first time, the piano harmonised and interplayed with the other instruments juxtaposing the keyboard’s coolness and precision with the strings’ resonating warmth, producing a superbly balanced three-movement composition. Fauré: Cited as one of the loveliest piano quartets of all time, the Piano Quartet in C minor creates its own language of romanticism, avoiding influences from the prevailing Wagnerian trends. Written in 1879, it is the first of two piano quartets composed by Fauré. Despite being in a minor key, the quartet is predominantly positive in tone, though the Adagio hints at the emotional turmoil in Fauré’s personal life. Profiles Arisa Fujita. Born in Japan, Arisa studied with David Takeno at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama where she won all the available violin prizes and where she is now a Professor. As a soloist and as a member, with her sisters, of the long-established Fujita Piano Trio, she has performed extensively worldwide including at more than 120 different venues in the UK alone.   Arisa has collaborated with various artists including Joshua Bell, Martin Lovett, Alexander Rudin and Steven Isserlis with all of whom she has performed on numerous occasions including at the Wigmore Hall, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, and in Japan and in France. Arisa has released numerous recordings (ASV and Intim Musik labels) including the Ysaÿe Solo Sonatas and Piano Trios by Takemitsu, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Ravel, Schubert, Dvořák, and Smetana.  Arisa has been invited to the Open Chamber Music Seminar of the IMS Prussia Cove each year for many years and has also taken part in their national tour.  A Trustee of the AWCT, she has directed 20 of the main Maiastra courses. Nic Hughes recently completed his undergraduate degree at the Royal College of Music and is starting his postgraduate studies at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama with Rachel Roberts. A keen chamber musician, Nic is a member of the Janus Chamber Ensemble. Ben Tarlton joined the Yehudi Menuhin School in 2011 to study with Thomas Carroll.
