Programme Note

The Brandenburg Concertos are considered to be amongst the pinnacle of Baroque composition. Each one uses a different combination of instruments and shows off different musical styles popular during Bach's lifetime, from the French minuet to the counterpoint for which the composer is himself so well known.

The concert also features performances of Handel’s ‘Eternal source of light divine’ and Bach's 'Coffee Cantata': essentially a miniature comic opera that tells the story of a disgruntled father, Schlendrian, who argues with his caffeine-obsessed daughter, Lieschen, about what he perceives to be her bad habit of indulging in too much coffee.

The other three Brandenburg Concertos will be performed by the same musicians on the following day (Tuesday the 30th of April) at a separate event.
