Programme Note

The members of the Band of Music are all specialists in Baroque music, whose individual careers include playing in various period ensembles. For this concert they present works for violin, cello, oboe and harpsichord.

In his lifetime, Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) was known primarily as an organist. Much of his instrumental music was written during his period as Kapellmeister at the court of Cöthen in 1717-23.

George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) was a celebrated keyboard virtuoso before achieving fame as a composer of opera and oratorio.

Johann Gottlieb Janitsch (1708–62) was employed by King Frederick II as a court musician in Berlin. He wrote in the galant style, in the transition between Baroque and Classical.

The enormously productive Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) was the most highly-regarded composer of his generation, and published more than 40 volumes of music. He was godfather to two of JS Bach’s sons, and maintained a life-long friendship with Handel, exchanging letters and sheet music by post.
