Programme Note
Francis Poulenc wrote 8 Sonatas, and the clarinet sonata is one of his final compositions. It is dedicated to the memory of Alfred Honegger, who together with Poulenc, was a member of “Les Six”, a group of musicians who were friends and lived in Paris.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart loved to play billiards and skittles, and “Kegelstatt” loosely translates as a “bowling alley”! The piece was written for Anton Stadler, the outstanding clarinettist of the time, for whom Mozart also wrote a Quintet and Concerto. This Trio was also written for his pianist friend Franziska Jacquin, and Mozart played the viola part with these 2 musicians.
Josef Suk’s Elegie was composed for a memorial event celebrating the life of the author Julius Zeyer, whose influence on Suk was second only to Dvořák’s. The subtitle is “Under the impression of Zeyer’s Vyšehrad”, a poem about the imposing fortress which overlooks Prague.
Dora Pejačević was born in Budapest of Croatian parents. She was 23 when she wrote this Piano Quartet, which was her first professional chamber composition.
