At the heart of the programme is Messiaen’s visionary Quartet for the end of Time, a dramatic exploration of the relationship between calmness and complexity, and a compelling expression of his deeply held catholic faith, written while he was a prisoner in a German concentration camp. Messiaen’s masterpiece is paired with music inspired by the sounds and rhythms of the world around us in Juno-award-winning composer Allan Gordon Bell’s Field Notes, and John Cage’s iconic 4’33”, an invitation to hear the sounds that no one notices, and challenging us to consider whether silence can ever truly exist.
