The usual ensemble was a sextet (pairs of clarinets, horns and bassoons), and their repertoire included arrangements of opera, instrumental music and chamber music, as well as works written specifically for this combination such as the Beethoven Sextet. His immensely popular Septet for wind and strings was arranged for wind sextet by his pupil, Czerny. Mozart himself was delighted to hear his opera arias played by a Harmonie outside his window.
