Programme Note

Rome’s flourishing musical life attracted many composers of the Baroque period. The ensemble’s namesake Arcangelo Corelli spent the bulk of his career there; Alessandro Scarlatti studied and then worked there between 1670 and 1684, returning periodically; Alessandro Stradella lived in Rome between 1653 and 1677 and Giuseppe Valentini between 1692 and his death in 1753, while Handel spent time there in 1707-08 – though his Gloria, rediscovered in 2001, may predate his visit.
