Not the celebrated work of William Shakespeare, but a ‘dramatick opera’, a bastardised version from 1674 re-worked for maximum appeal to Restoration audiences! Leading composers such as Matthew Locke provided new music, while spectacular sets and pint-sized devils stole the show to the extent that Shakespeare’s original remained a rarity until well into the 19th century. Following performances in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at Shakespeare’s Globe in 2015, this fascinating score is brought to York and enhanced by dramatic interludes from the play.
