Programme Note

The November concert will be a large event in so many ways.

All three pieces use the full symphony orchestra; the solo instrument is one of the biggest instruments in the orchestra, and the popular symphony by Sir Edward Elgar is a massive orchestral work.

Britten's opera Gloriana is rarely done. However the suite of music taken from the work has become a really popular orchestral suite, giving a very attractive mixture of easy listening 20th century music mixed with due homage to the medieval period in its style and sounds.

The Tuba concerto is a firm favourite with many audiences, showing this fine instrument at it’s best, and with some of VW”s most glorious music and melodies in evidence, especially in the slow movement.

Elgar’s popular and powerful 2nd symphony will bring in warmth and passion to conclude this winter concert.
