Programme Note

Composed in 1828, the last year of his life, Schubert's F minor fantasy is generally thought to be the greatest work written for four hands. Typical of his late works such as the string quartet in G major, it uses the major-minor duality that is thought to represent his declining mental state.

Unlike Schubert,  Louis Spohr 1784-1859 was a celebrated composer in his own lifetime but with posterity has become more rarely performed. He wrote 18 violin concertos,10 symphonies, 10 operas and many chamber works, was a friend and collaborator of Beethoven and invented the violin chinrest.

Ravel's Sonata for violin & cello is considered the greatest masterpiece written for this pairing of instruments. Dedicated to Debussy, this work is fearsomely difficult for the players and shows Ravel at his most inventive.

Tickets for those attending both this and concert 2 will be available at the usual price for a full-length concert (including a glass of wine or soft drink).
