Programme Note
Inspired by Jane Austen's love of music and her hand-written playbooks, this gala concert celebrates her 250th anniversary in music and words. With thanks to the curator of Jane Austen’s House and her team for their help in researching this project
West Meon Festival is delighted to welcome Felicity Kendal to read from Austen's letters, notebooks, and extracts from her works curated by internationally celebrated director Nancy Meckler.
The short first half will showcase works contemporary to Austen, including Beethoven's D Major string trio and Schubert's "Einsamkeit" D620. The main feature, "Jane Austen's Playbook" includes an exciting world première of a new commission by the West Meon Music Festival, "Notes for a Novel - or ‘how a tune a day inspired the development of Pride & Prejudice . . .’", by composer Peter Salem (BBC TV productions including Call the Midwife, Cider With Rosie, Great Expectations).
The Festival also welcoms back world-famous tenor James Gilchrist to join with the Primrose Piano Quartet in songs and chamber music of the time including works by Schubert, Beethoven, Handel, Haydn, Maria Teresa von Paradis and James Hook.
Tea and cakes are included in the ticket price, will be served in the interval.
