Programme Note

West Meon Music Festival is proud to present in partnership with The Jane Austen House, this gala concert in celebration of the Jane Austen 250th anniversary. Inspired by her playbooks in the Archive in Chawton, it features texts, vocal and instrumental music woven together to present an entertaining insight into Jane Austen’s love of music.

The concert features works contemporary to Austen by Schubert, Beethoven, Pleyel, Handel, James Hook and an exciting world première of a new commission by WMMF, “Jane Austen’s Playbook” by Peter Salem (BBC TV productions including: Call the Midwife, Cider with Rosie, Great Expectations).

The Festival also welcomes back world-famous tenor James Gilchrist to join the quartet for songs including Austen’s favourite Scottish songs by Beethoven.

The narrator will be a celebrity actor (to be confirmed in mid-July) to read Austen’s letters, notebooks and extracts from her works.

Tea and cakes will be served in the interval.

James Gilchrist
