Programme Note

Tom Aldren joins the Primrose again for the Brahms Piano Quintet Op.34 (1893).
The Quintet is a dark mighty work and generally considered to be amongst Brahms's greatest chamber music.

Schubert began composing the B flat trio in 1827, the year before his death, and worked on it simultaneously with “Die Winterreise”. Unlike the song-cycle, the trio is unremittingly sunny and optimistic and has become one of Schubert’s most popular works.

Continuing the Festival’s celebration of Shostakovich’s music, his lovely Five pieces for Two Violins & Piano (arranged by his student Atovmian) have a touchingly Viennese flavour.
He composed them during the time of his first job, playing the piano for silent movies.

This concert is candlelit, and tickets include a glass of wine or soft drink, served in the interval.
