Programme Note
This programme will again celebrate both the Shostakovich and Ravel anniversaries.
Shostakovich is featured in one of his most popular pieces, the Sonata for Cello and Piano (1934), written during the happy period of a brief love affair and brimming with melodies, colours and dramatic effects.
Ravel's Tzigane (Gypsy) was inspired by the Hungarian violinist Jelly d'Arányi's 1924 performance of the composer's Sonata for Violin and Cello with cellist Hans Kindler. The piece is fearsomely difficult and demands such techniques from the violinist as artificial harmonics, left-hand pizzicatos, complex multiple-stops, and sustained octave passages.
Brahms composed the three Intermezzi Op. 117 in the summer of 1892 while staying in Bad Ischl.
He told a friend that they were "three lullabies of my grief".
Coffee is included and will be served before the concert from 11am.
