Programme Note
Born in Bucharest, Romania, to a family of musicians, Cristian Sandrin started his musical training with Marina Dragomirescu and Cristian Dumitrescu at the Dinu Lipatti Colegiul National de Arte. He made his solo debut at the famous Romanian Athenaeum in 2006. In July 2016 Cristian graduated from the Royal Academy of Music with a first class undergraduate degree, where he held an ABRSM scholarship and the John S. Cohen Foundation Award. He is currently studying for his MMus degree under the tutelage of Diana Ketler, supported by the Countess of Munster Musical Trust, Mark James Award and the Tillett Trust. He is also a scholarship recipient of the Imogen Cooper Musical Trust, Martin Musical Scholarship Fund and Help UK Musicians. Future engagements include a piano recital at Wigmore Hall in September 2017.
Cristian is a very active musician, having made his solo debut recital at St Martin-in-the-Fields in January 2016 and his first chamber music appearance at Wigmore Hall with cellist Margarita Balanas. Since 2014 he has also been experimenting with directing small ensembles from the keyboard, including for the Mozart Chamber Music Series at the Academy. In January 2013, as a semi-finalist of the Jaques Samuels Piano Intercollegiate Piano Competition, Cristian was awarded a lunchtime recital at St James’, Piccadilly and, later that month, he made his first appearance at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, performing Chopin études in a multimedia setting during the Imagine Children’s Festival. In Romania, Cristian is a frequent guest artist with the Bacau National Philharmonic, Sibiu National Philharmonic, Râmnicu-Vâlcea National Philharmonic and Bucharest Symphony Orchestra, performing under the batons of Ovidiu Balan and Florin Totan.
A keen chamber musician, Cristian has featured in the SoNoRo International Chamber Music Festival, collaborating over the years with Diana Ketler, Bjørg Lewis, Andrei Ionita, Erich-Oskar Hütter and Razvan Popovici. Other international engagements include performances at Sala Manuel de Falla in Madrid, Palazzo Ricci in Montepulciano, La Fenice Theatre in Venice, Bulgaria Hall in Sofia, University Church of St Mary the Virgin in Oxford, The Castle, Wellingborough, and at the Polish National Concert Hall during the 2015 International Chopin Piano Competition. Cristian has been a prizewinner of numerous national and international piano competitions, including first prizes at the Pro Piano Romania International Piano Competition and Yuri Boukoff International Competition in Sofia. A laureate of the prestigious Animato Competition in Paris, Cristian was invited on numerous occasions to perform at the Salle Cortot during the Mardis d’Animato concert series. Other awards include the William Sterndale Bennett Prize for Romantic repertoire and the Greta Parkinson Prize at the Academy.
His performances have been broadcast by TVR Cultural, the NHK, the Polish National Television, Trinitas TV and Radio Romania Muzical.
