Programme Note
Amid the despondency of a World War II prisoner-of-war camp, the apocalyptic prophecies of Revelations resonated profoundly with the deeply pious Olivier Messiaen. Striving not for retribution but instead spiritual reflection upon the world beyond, Messiaen wrote the Quartet for the End of Time for musician companions held captive there. Premiering this mystical work on a winter's night in 1941 to some four hundred prisoners and guards, Messiaen later recalled 'never was I listened to with such rapt attention and comprehension'. War, too, was on the horizon at the conception of Ravel's impassioned Piano Trio of 1914, spurring on the completion of this enchanting work so that Ravel could serve in the French army, as Messiaen later would in World War I's tragic sequel.
