Programme Note
2017 marks the 70th anniversary of the twinning of Oxford with the German city of Bonn in 1947, one of the first official Anglo-German links to be formally established after the war. The culmination of a week of special events throughout Oxford, Marios Papadopoulos and the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra honour Bonn's most famous son in a programme dedicated to two towering masterpieces. Beethoven's 'Emperor' concerto was conceived under fire as Napoleon's forces surrounded Vienna, yet it conveys a tenderness and beauty far removed from the sounds of the battlefield. His fifth symphony remains among the most recognisable in the entire history of the genre; an exhilarating work of dramatic power.
