The UK based chamber orchestra, London Concertante, regularly perform up to and over one hundred concerts per year, making it the busiest ensemble of its kind in the country. Regularly selling out venues such as St. Martin-in-the-Fields and Southwark Cathedral, the ensemble performs in some of the most prestigious venues around Britain and abroad, with recent tours taking them to USA, Finland, Germany, Holland, Ireland, Spain and France.  With their numerous recordings reaching great critical acclaim, the ensemble is continually regarded as one of the finest groups in Europe since their founding in 1991. London Concertante return to St Giles’ Cathedral, Edinburgh, during their 2018 Autumn Seasons with a concert inspired by the masters of the classical genre. Focused on exploring the relationship between the Oboe and Violin through the music of the great composer, culminating in his elegant double concerto for the pair, the ensemble breathes a fresh dynamism to this most enduring of works. The work is renowned for its unusual conception, lost and re-written from an earlier transcription for two harpsichords.  Composed of three movements, the opening creates an energetic and excitable vibrancy and catchiness, before the sublime second movement develops in a more dreamlike serenity with graceful orchestral accompaniment to the soloists.  Concluding with a playful, busy and bright finale, this double concerto confronts the soloists (and accompanying orchestra) with a variety of challenging and immensely colourful writing, resulting in a delightful spectacle for the listener.  Continuing the programme, London Concertante perform some of the gems of the oboe repertoire alongside Bach’s masterpiece: presenting the delicious combination of Mozart’s delicate in nature but highly virtuosic Oboe Quartet alongside the sheer emotivity of Albinoni’s solo writing in his Oboe concerto in D minor. If you don’t consider yourself ‘in the know’ about Mozart, Beethoven, or Bach, fear not, this is the orchestra for you. The London Concertante boasts an impressive audience record in which an impressive 50% of spectators are first time classical concert goers!
